The essentials of being a good member of the Earthseed Community are to:

1. Learn to shape God with forethought, care, and work.

2. Educate and benefit your community, your family, and yourself.

3. Contribute to the fulfillment of the Destiny.

You may discover that you are already doing these things. If that’s the case, then joining Earthseed will be a recognition of the fact that you have been a Shaper for some time.

Joining Earthseed is a simple matter of agreeing to follow the three essentials above and reciting the “Words of Welcoming” to another Shaper:

I am Earthseed—
One of many
One unique,
One small seed,
One great promise.
Tenacious of life,
Shaper of God,
Water,
Fire,
Sculptor,
Clay,
We are Earthseed!
And our Destiny,
The Destiny of Earthseed,
Is to take root
Among the stars.

New Shapers should also read the Book of the Living. We also recommend reading Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower (1993) and Parable of the Talents (1998).
